IntroductionYouth Day on 16th June is a public holiday in South Africa and commemorates a protest which resulted in a wave of protests across the country known as the Soweto uprising of 1976.It came in response to multiple issues with the Bantu Education Act and the government edict in 1974 that Afrikaans be used as medium of instruction for certain subjects in black schools. The iconic picture of Hector Pieterson, a black schoolchild shot by the police, brought home to many people within and outside of South Africa the effect of the struggle during the Apartheid government's reign.

Young people need to think through the problems they face thoroughly before jumping to creating solutions. We are a country that supposedly works on representation and we young people make up 60% of the population. Simply put, government needs to create space for young people take charge, it needs to loosen its grip and let young people take centre stage. They need to make room for innovation to make its way to the top and trickle back down again. We are future leaders but the future starts today.

Wish everyone a happy holiday!
